Cu64Copper 64

Copper-64 is a radioisotope used in positron emission tomography (PET) and it has a half-life of 12,7h. It has been used for a long time in different applications (such as hypoxia imaging 64Cu-ATSM) and more recently as part of the theranostics pair with Copper 67 (for therapy).

To produce Copper 64,
we recommend this production route:

  • Recommended

    Target:

    Nirta® Liquid target

The irradiation of enriched Ni via  64Ni(p,n)64Cu nuclear reaction, which is extensively prevalent and with almost no competitive copper radioisotopes involved in the process to deteriorate the purity.

    Chemistry:

    Synthera® extension

The technique is capable of delivering batches of  purified 64Cu ([64Cu]CuCl2); with only 30 min of post-process after End-Of-Beam (EOB), while avoiding the  technical difficulties arising from the use of conventional solid targets.

    Target:

    Nirta® solid target

Nirta® Solid target can be used for irradiation of enriched 64Ni to produce 64Cu via 64Ni(p,n)64Cu nuclear reaction. The target is electroplated onto a silver backing with the Nirta® plating system. The target material is then  manually or automatically transferred to a hot cell.

Since the enriched 64Ni is very expensive, recycling is recommended.

    Chemistry:

    Dissolution & Purification

The irradiated target material is then dissolved and post-processed. Pinctada® platform is a complete industrial platform for the dissolution & separation for production of 64Cu.

The purified radioisotope is obtained in the form of Copper-chloride and it can be used for further labelling manually or on Synthera®
